Plenty of what the big-box stores sell simply dies here. We plant what thrives in the High Desert: trees for shade and wind protection, shrubs and ground cover that handle heat, cold snaps and alkaline soil, each placed where it can do its job.
Every planting goes in with the drip irrigation to support it, so the landscape gets fuller each year instead of thinner.
A good planting plan works in layers. A tree or two for structure, shrubs for body, then ground cover and perennials for color that comes back on its own. Give it a season or two on drip and the yard starts doing the work itself. That’s the goal: a landscape that gets better while you do less.
